Sawin died at the home of his sister, Mrs. C. M. Smith on Saturday, Nov. 1, 1902, of paralysis. Mr. Sawin was born in Chenango County, N. Y., on February 19, 1819. He was of the fifth generation in direct descent from John Sawin, the founder of the family in America, who settled in the Massachussets Colony in 1650, only 30 years after the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. The deceased came to Wisconsin on a prospecting tour in 1844 and decided to located in this state, engaging to work as a farm hand. His father came the following year, and being pleased with the country, also decided to locate here. In 1846, accompanied by his father, he located in the town of Brooklyn, Green Co.; at the time of his death he was still owner of the 200 acre farm he formerly located upon. His father was the first Baptist minister in this territory. One brother and four sisters, Ethan P. Sawin, of this City, Mrs. Clarissa Tillinghast of Riplet, N. Y., Mesdames Mary J. Montgomery, Eleanor Baldwin, and Juliette Smith, of this city, besides many friends, are left to mourn the loss of a devoted brother, a kind neighbor and a true friend. The funeral services were held at the home of Dr. Smith on Tuesday morning at 10:00 o'clock Rev. J. W. Hoage, officiating. Interment in the cemetery on Jug Prairie.
