Obituary: Rock County, Wisconsin: Elnathan SAWTELLE ************************************************************************ Submitted by Ruth Ann Montgomery, April 2008 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Sawtell--Obituary Mr. Elnathan Sawtelle who died early on the morning of June 16, 1891, and who was buried from his residence on Church at 2:30 o'clock last Thursday afternoon, Rev. Dr. Hodge, of Janesville, officiating, was 68 years of age. Mr. Sawtell was a native of Ludlow, Vt., came West with his father, mother and sister, Mrs. Green, and settled in the town of Union. About twenty-six years ago (1865) Mr. Sawtell came to Evansville, bought the property where Mr. Frank Emery now lives and built the fine residence on the corner of East Main and Cemetery Streets. Mr. Ferris was the owner of the premises. The only building was a log house originally owned and occupied by Rev. Boyd Phelps. The members of Mr. Sawtelle's family are all dead excepting one sister here--Mrs. E. F. Green, and another in California. A niece--Mrs. Beebe, of West Superior, and another one, Mrs. I. M. Bennett, of Chicago, were present at the funeral. Mr. Sawtelle was not a member of the Baptist church, as many were led to suppose. (A thing which he deeply regretted in his later life) but was a member of the Baptist society and congregation. He led a good life and was no doubt, a Christian man both in heart and conduct. He leaves a widowed wife and many friends to mourn his departure. June 23, 1891, Evansville Review, Evansville, Wisconsin
