Obituary: Rock County, Wisconsin: Jacob ANTES ************************************************************************ Submitted by Ruth Ann Montgomery, June 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ JACOB ANTES DIES IN ROCKFORD Was Resident of Evansville for Eighteen Years Sept. 8, 1828-April 21, 1924 Died at his home at 520 Cherry St., Rockford, Ill., Monday morning, April 21, at 10:30 o'clock. The deceased was born September 8, 1828 at Antes Fort, Northumberland Co. Pa., where he passed the days of his childhood and youth. June 12, 1856 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Bowes, at Mifflinburg, Pa. In 1858 he moved to Michigan, residing there till 1867, when they located at Lena, Ill. In 1878 they made their home in Rockford, Ill, where he engaged in the furniture business till 1882, moving from there to this city where he actively engaged in the furniture and undertaking business till 1897, when he returned to Rockford and opened a furniture store on West State St., retiring from business a few years later. Since the death of his wife in 1915, he has made his home with his daughter, Miss Elizabeth Antes, Rockford, Ill. To the union of Jacob Antes and Margaret Bowes, four children were born. Joseph B., Elizabeth, William H., deceased, and Robert M. Brief prayer services were held at the Rockford home Wednesday morning, Ira A. Morton, of Court Street M. E. Church, officiating. The remains were brought to the home of his son, R. M. Antes, this city, funeral services being conducted there at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday, april 23, by the Rev. Hanaman, interment being made in Maple Hill Cemetery. Those left to mourn his loss are Joseph B., Elizabeth, of Rockford and Robert M., of this city, five grand children and four great grandchildren. In the passing of Jacob Antes at the ripe age of 96, there goes from the Middle West one of those of the pioneer type who leaving their comfortable homes in the East, helped push westward the habits of unceasing industry and high ideals that has made the thought and song "Out Where the West Begins", not only a reality, but an inspiration that fills and fires the breasts of the young, farther East, to become by adoption, at least, Children of the West. Ever a man of strong character, Mr. Antes has left behind him an influence, both in his family and with those connected with him in business and in daily association--an influence that will be felt in the future of the Middle West, as well as it is today. Strong of physique, will-power and character, in the early days of pioneering he met and overcame obstacles which to the men and women of the present seem appaling. In his business associations in this city, Mr. Antes made many friends who respected him for his honesty of purpose and unswerving integrity, coupled with a sentimental love for his fellow man, which ever made him a friend of those in trouble or distress. These friends as they watched the lowering of the casket yesterday to its last resting place, regretted in their hearts that the laws of God rule that Man must return to his original Dust, thereby taking from among us a man whose influence has ever been for the betterment of humanity, the standards of Morality and the ties of friendship.
