Benway The funeral of Martin C. Benway, one of the old settlers of Rock County, was held at the Baptist church in Union Tuesday afternoon. April 16, at two o'clock, Rev. J. L. Taber officiating. Mr. Benway's death occurred at seven o'clock Saturday morning, April 13, at his home in Union after a long illness. He was born in Jericho, Vermont, Nov. 16, 1831. At the age of sixteen, he with his parents moved to Chemung, Ill., where he resided until after his marriage, Oct. 19, 184(?) to Hannah Blake. To this union were born four children, Robert, Maria and Albert Benway, and Mrs. Addie Franklin, two of whom, Maria and Albert, passed away some years ago. Since his marriage Mr. Benway has lived the greater part of his life in the vicinity of Union where he is widely known and highly respect. For over twenty years Mr. Benway served as sexton of the Baptist church in Union, of which he was a member. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 42nd regiment of Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, two children, Robert E. and Mrs. Addie Franklin, and four grandchildren, Edith, Flloyd and Elva Benway and Velma Franklin. One sister, Mrs. Gutheria Milton survives him. His many friends know him as a man of sterling qualities, unselfish and ever willing to do a kindness to friend or neighbor. He was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed by his family and a large circle of friends. Interment was made in Maple Hill cemetery, Evansville.
