Obituary: Rock County, Wisconsin: George BROWN ************************************************************************ Submitted by Ruth Ann Montgomery, June 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ George Brown, whose parents were among the early settlers of Rock County, settling in the Town of Center in 1846, died at the homestead farm, six miles northwest of Janesville, Thursday at 9 p.m. April 17th. He had celebrated his 88th birthday only Monday. Mr. Brown had lived 78 years on the farm where he died. Mr. Brown served as a director of the Brown School board for 23 years. Mr. Brown was born in Stowe Village, Vermont, April 14, 1836, came to Rock County with his parents May 29, 1846 and has been a farmer all his life. He married Polly MacDonald in 1872 and 4 sons and one daughter were born. The wife and one son preceded him in death, Mrs. Brown dying in 1910. Surviving are three sons, Fred G. Brown, Fond du Lac, Edson on the home farm, Charles in Janesville. One daughter, Mrs. Walker Little of Janesville and two grand daughters, Catherine and Gladys Little and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Garten, Elgin, Ill. Funeral services were held at the Whaley Parlors at 2 p.m. Sunday, the Rev. Frank J. Scribner officiating. The burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The pall-bearers were sons of the early settlers of this community, Harvey and Walter Little, George Yeomans, Frank Lowry, Seth Crall and John Fisher.
