W. Calkins Drops Dead Mr. Judson Wells Calkins, one of Evansville's most prominent businessmen died suddenly about nine-thirty Wednesday night. He attended a business conference of the firm, of which he was the vice president, and at the close descended the stairs leading from the office. On the lower steps he stumbled and fell, and when his associates reached him he was already dead. Mr. Calkins was the pioneer grocer of Evansville, and his name and influence have been associated wtih the growth and development of the city. He was the vice president of the firm of Langemak, Axtell & Calkins Co., proprietors of the "Economy" Store. Mr. Calkins, until a recent election, was president of the Commercial Club and one of its most interested members. As business man and citizen he has won the lasting regard of the community and his death will be widely and deeply felt. In his own home life has been little short of ideal. Mr. Calkins was born January 27, 1858, at East Aurora, Erie County, New York State. He came to Evansville thrity-seven years ago. He was married to Miss Julia Clinch, from new Brunswick, Canada, on June 20, 1888. Four children were born to them, Kathleen, Marion, Charles Delavan and Elizabeth, who died in infancy. His immediate relatives are his stepmother, half sister, Miss Charlotte Calkins, East Aurora, New York State, and a cousin, Mrs. A. C. Gray, of this city.
