CHAPEL ************************************************************************ Submitted by Ruth Ann Montgomery, June 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Obituary Died, at his home in this city, about 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Mr. R. O. Chapel. Russel O. Chapel was born in Pompey, Onondaga co., N. Y., June 13, 1835. He came to Wisconsin with his parents in 1841, settling in Racine; in 1845 they came to this township, being among the first settlers in the village of Union, residing there until in 1852, they moved to Iowa settling on a farm; in 1859 he went to Pike's Peak and later to California where he engaged in railroading until 1867. Returning to Magnolia, this county, he made the acquaintance of Lucy A. Reed, and on April 27, 1858, they were united in holy wedlock. Since then he has made Magnolia his home, until a year ago he moved to Evansville. Mr. Chapel has been employed the greater part of the time as railroad engineer. He has been a member of the masonic order for years; seven years ago he united with the M. E. church, being a zealous christian since that time. As he realized his end was drawing nigh he said, I am ready; saying to his wife and children, only for you do I regret my departure. All through life he has been a strong, healthy man, not being sick to speak of. On Sunday morning the 4th inst. he was taken with a stroke of paralysis; it was thought he might recover, however he said from the first he could not get well. All was done that loving hands and medical skill could do, but God in his infinite wisdom said, it is enough, come home. He is survived by his wife and five daughters, Cora B., Flora M., who is the wife of Everett Townsend of magnolia, Lura E., Clara E., and Adeline L. The funeral services were held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon at the M. E. church. April 23, 1897, The Enterprise, p. 1, col. 4, Evansville, Wisconsin
