CLIFFORD DIES Another Old Settler of Rock County is Laid at Rest Charles M. Clifford was born in Freedom, Me., Dec. 20, 1834, one of a family of twelve children. At the age of twenty-one he came west and settled in Magnolia, Wis., where he resided for a number of years, then locating in Evansville, where he has been a well-known citizen for forty- five years. Mr. Clifford was one of the oldest Masons in this section of the state, having been an active member of that order for over fifty years. He was present at and assisted in the organization of Union lodge No. 32, of Evansville. He has ben a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church for the past forty years, serving in various official positions in that church, always with credit to himself and as a source of strength to the church. He believed that the church had a great mission in the world, and that it was the duty of every man to give of himself to the accomplishment of that mission. Mr. Clifford was one of the best known citizens of our city, and his loss will be felt by a wide circle of good friends and acquaintances. He passed away at his home, last Thursday afternoon at four-fifteen, after only five days illness with pneumonia. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon in charge of the Masonic fraternity. Rev. T. W. North conducted the services at the Methodist church, and spoke of Mr. Clifford as a friend, as a man of great convictions concerning a man's relations to God and to his fellow man. The floral offerings were profuse and very beautiful. Mr. Clifford was married April 1863, to Margaret J. Robson. To this union there were born four children: Mrs. L. Van Wart of Evansville, Frederic C. Clifford of Milwaukee, R. Ray Clifford and Gladys M. Clifford of Evansville, all of whom survive the husband and father. To these his loved ones, his many friends extend their sympathy. January 13, 1910, Evansville Review, p. 1, Evansville, Wisconsin
