Cole, 84; Answers Final Call at Home of Daughter; Buried in Stoughton Funeral services for John M. Cole, 84, Evansville Civil War veteran, who died Friday, July 26 in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ida Caldwell, Beloit, were held in the Rossman-Kinzer chapel, Beloit, Sunday, July 28. Burial was made in Stoughton. Born in Jackson, Mich., Oct. 23, 1845, Mr. Cole came to Wisconsin in 1849. He enlisted in Company C, 40th Wisconsin infantry, from Madison on May 10, 1864, and was mustered out on Sept. 16, 1864. He was married to Miss Charlotte Houtby Dec. 31, 1868 and after residing in Dunkirk for a year moved to Hillsdale county, Mich., where he lived for three years. After residing in Winterset, Ia., for six year, Mr. Cole and his wife moved to Stoughton locating in this city 43 years ago. He was a shoemaker by trade and a member of the G. A. R. and I.O.O.F. Besides a host of friends Mr. Cole is survived by a son, Edger M. Cole, 129 Liberty Street, this city; a daughter, Mrs. Ida Caldwell, 1237 Elm Street, Beloit; ten grandchildren; and a sister residing in Idaho.
