B. Hartley Dies in New York State Funeral Held This Afternon The many friends of Mrs. J. B. Hartley were surprised when word was received late Monday evening of her death. For the past two or three years she had been gradually growing weaker, but no one outside of her own family realized that the end might be so near. It was only a few weeks ago that she left in company with her daughter, Mrs. Emery, for Perry, New York, to remain for a time with another daughter, Mrs. Coleman. Elizabeth Evelyn Hubbs was born at Oppingheim, Fulton County, New York, May 11, 1837. The family later moved to Jefferson County. In 1845, they moved to Wisconsin and settled in Rock County. She was united in marriage to Joseph B. Hartley, October 28, 1856, at Janesville. For a number of years their home was on the farm, until 1884, when the family moved to Evansville. The husband died April 8, 1901. Mrs. Harlety had been a faithful member of the Congregational church during her residence in this city. For many years she has taken an active interest in the work of the woman's missionary society. While she had been shut in her home most of the time during the past few years she kept her interest in all that was transpiring in the world around her. She carried on a very extensive correspondence with friends in all parts of the country, thus continuing to brighten and influence the lives of many. Mrs. Hartley was one of eight children, but one of whom, Chas. L. Hubbs, of San Diego, Cal., survives her. Two of her children had preceeded her into the great beyond, the oldest son, who died at the age of 25, and a daughter, who died in infancy. She leaves to mourn her loss, three daughters, Mrs. Mary Hellen Webster, of Talent, Oregon., Mrs. Coral E. Coleman of Perry, N. Y., and Mrs. Grace B. Emery of Piedmont, Cal., and one son, Robert D., of this city. Her death occurred at 7:30 Monday evening in Perry, Wyoming County, New York. She was brought to Evansville by Mrs. Coleman, and Mrs. Emery reaching here yesterday noon. The funeral services will be held at the home of her son, R. D. Hartley, this afternoon at half past two and will be conducted by Rev. D. Quincy Grabill of the Congregational church. The interment will be in the family lot in Maple Hill Cemetery.
