Obituary: Rock County, Wisconsin: Alexander HOSKINS ************************************************************************ Submitted by Ruth Ann Montgomery, February 2007 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Alexander Hoskins died between 5 and 6 o'clock, Monday morning, October 19, 1885, aged 71 years on the 29th of February last. Mr. Hoskins came to Evansville from Indiana, August 1856, after having stopped a few months in Madison. He engaged in the mercantile business but from a pressure of financial matters, owing to a depression in the grain and produce market of those days, was obliged to give up business. He built and owned the corner drug store, at that time occupied by C. L. Semans. He was a carpenter by trade, and actively pursued that business until last fall when he was attacked with diabetis. He continued in poor health during the winter, but occasionally went out of doors. This spring he partially recovered from that complaint, but other diseases, peculiar to age and a hard wrought life, kept him weakened, and he spent most of the time indoors, occasionally riding out. He felt hopeful that he would recover, and even on Thursday of the previous week, rode out upon the street. His friends who knew him best and knew of his complaints, were fearful that life with him was nearly ended. He was not a religious man in the ordinary use of that term, but no man can truthfully say that Alex Hoskins ever wronged him out of a cent. He was a man of kind and generous impulses and had few enemies. His wife, by second marriage survives him. He also leaves a son and daughter. He was buried from his late residence on East Main street, Monday afternoon, sermon by Rev. J. E. Coleman, of the Evansville Seminary.
