Obituary: Rock County, Wisconsin: Allen HOXIE ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, June 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Weekly Gazette and Free Press March 14, 1862 Died In Cooksville, Wis., February 26th, Mr. Allen Hoxie, aged 65 years. In the decease of Mr. Hoxie, our community has lost one of its oldest and most esteemed citizens. He emigrated to the west from Maine, in 1845, and has since been a resident among us, with the exception of a few years spent in California. In his life he exemplified many virtues, and in his protracted illness and death, a christian's resignation, trust and joy. For many years he has zealously participated in the various reforms of the day, and from the commencement of our temperance organization has been an active and valued member. He firmly believed in the communion of departed spirits with firneds on earth; and however we many differ from some of his peculiar views, we could not, but feel, as we witness his departure, that his faith was all sufficient for him, as it carried him serenely, yes, joyfully through the dark portals to that brighter existence for which he so ardently longed. We might all wish that our lives may be as pure, and our end as peaceful as his.
