HURLBUT ************************************************************************ Submitted by Ruth Ann Montgomery, June 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ OBITUARY Died: Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, Mrs. Mary A. Hurlbut, of congestion of the lungs, aged 64 years. Mary A. Battles was born in Ireland, in Sept. 1836. At the age of five years she came with her parents and brothers and sisters to Canada. After but a short residence there both of her parents died within a week of each other. She was adopted by Mr. Lewis at the age of twelve and came to the vicinity of Evansville to live. August 3, 1863, she was married in Stoughton, Wis., to William Hurlbut and that fall they moved to Minnesota where they lived 26 year and then came to this city where they have since made their home. This couple had no children but in their early married life they adopted a child who later became Mrs. William Ahara and who died last Nov. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hurlbut. Since their daughter's death the fond grandparents have tenderly cared for two of her sons. While living in Minn. Mrs. Hurlbut joined the Methodist church and upon taking up her residence here she became a member of the local church of the same denomination and has ever remained a stalwart christian. She gave abundantly of her store to benevolences of varied natures and we believe has never failed in doing her whole duty in whatever capacity she has lent her energies. The death of Mrs. Hurlbut was a great surprise to many as she had been about the house until Sunday afternoon when the doctor was called and found her very low. She grew rapidly worse and was unconcious when she died Tuesday morning. The funeral was held from the late home Thursday afternoon at half past one o'clock and from the Methodist church at two o'clock. The members of the Women's Foreign Missionary society of which the deceased was a faithful ember attended in a body. Many other friends assembled to pay their last respects to a good woman. Rev. Webster Millar officiated. The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out for the bereaved husband and grandchildren.
