Thomas Arthur Hyland, who died at his home in Astoria, Oregon, Sunday Dec. 11, 1904, was the pioneer Episcopal rector of that city and among the first upon the Pacific Coast. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, Dec. 27, 1834, and therefore lacked but a few days of being seventy years old. The deceased arrived in New York in 1858 and immediately entered the Theological Seminary, from which he was ordained in 1861. His missionary journey to Oregon resulted in his building two churches, Grace of Astoria, and Holy Innocents' of Uppertown. In 1878 he returned to New York City as rector of the Holy Comfort church, but failing health compelled him to retire from active work and he returned in 1891 again to his western home. Mr Hyland will be remembered in this city as the brother-in-law of Mrs. E. M. S. Hawley. Upon several occasions while sojourning here he has performed the work of rector, there being no resident pastor. The deceased leaves a wife and one brother, the Rev. P. E. Hyland, rector of St. Mark's of Seattle, Washington. December 24, 1904, The Badger, p. 1, col. 5, Evansville, Wisconsin
