It had been known for several years that he was failing in health, but it was not generally known that his condition was very serious. In fact he was at his usual place of work in the Economy grocery department as late as Christmas eve. On Christmas day he was on the street. He was only confined to his bed on Thursday, thus being spared a long sickness, which he had always dreaded. Andrew Manning was born in Connecticut, May 6, 1851. At a very early age he came with his father, his mother, having died, to Milwaukee. In the early sixties the family moved to Albany. About 1869 Andrew came to Evansville, where his home has since been. During all these years, he has been in mercantile life, building up a reputation for sterling integrity and devotion to his work, so that he was unusually appreciated by the public. He was at one time in the employ of George L. Pullen's father. Later he was with Winston and Bennett. For over twenty-seven years he has been employed by J. W. Calkins. The funeral was held Tuesday morning in St. Paul's church. The burial was in Maple Hill cemetery. Mr. W. B. Manning, a brother, arrived Sunday night from St. James, Minn., and a brother-in-law, J. T. Desmond from Sioux City, Iowa. Besides these, he leaves a stepmother and a half sister to mourn his loss. January 6, 1910, Evansville Review, Evansville, Wisconsin
