Preston was born in Janesville, Wis., December 20, 1848. He served in the Union army in 1864 joining the ranks when but little over sixteen years of age. He was thus over fifty years a member of the G. A. R. April 22, 1869 he was married to Catherine Searls. Two years later he and his wife were converted under the labors of Revs. Wm. Sheldon and E. B. Graves, prominent in the early days of the Adventist church in Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. Preston united with the Fisher Valley Advent Christian church. They resided in Stoughton for a number of years, finally removing, in 1904 to Buchanan, Mich., where they lived until parted by the arch-enemy. Uniting with the Advent Christian church of that place, they entered heartily into its work, Mr. Preson endearing himself to all by his consistent and devoted Christian life. He became and continued until his death, the president of the Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan Advent Christian conference. He died at his home in Buchanan, March 30, 1915 of heart disease, at the age of 66 years, 3 months, and 10 days. He leaves a widow to mourn his loss, as well as a host of neighbors and friends. Funeral services were conducted in the Buchanan A. C. church, April 1, by the deceased's pastor, Rev. C. W. Bronw. The body was brought to Evansville for burial in the family plot. A brief service was held at the home of his cousin, Mrs. Hubbard, conducted by Rev. C. H. Hewitt of Magnolia on Friday, April 2. "I know in whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day." April 8, 1915, Evansville Review, p. 7, col. 3, Evansville, Wisconsin
