Obituary: Rock County, Wisconsin: H. W. SMITH ************************************************************************ Submitted by Ruth Ann Montgomery, June 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Died:--At his home in this city, Jan. 8, Mr. H. W. Smith, of bowel complaint, aged 74 years. Mr. Smith's demise reminds us that the ranks of our country's soldiers are being rapidly lessened and that in a few years more there will be none left to "tell the stories." The deceased was engaged in actual service in the late war and the disease which finally resulted in death, was contracted in the army. He has been confined to the house for the past four weeks and during that time has been very much missed from the various places of business where he was often found discussing topics of national importance. Before coming to this city he was engaged in newspaper business and since old age had made it impossible for him to do hard work, he has very often lent a willing hand in helping to "get the paper off to press" in the offices of this city. The deceased leaves a wife and two daughters. The funeral occurred Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the Congregational church of which he was a member. Many of his comrades followed the remains to Maple Hill cemetery where the interment was made. January 15, 1898, The Badger, p. 1, col. 4, Evansville, Wisconsin
