Hiram Veek, a weak-witted man of 33, was burned to death late Saturday afternoon in a fire that destroyed the O. H. Veek farm home five miles west of Orfordville. Since the death of the man's mother two years ago, he and his father had lived alone. Shortly after 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon the father, went to the barn to do his chores. In a few minutes he saw flames bursting from the windows of the house. He rushed to the place and made a desperate effort to rescue his son. He was badly burned in his unsuccessful effort to reach the son. It is believed the son, poured the contents of a can of gasoline on a fire in the heating stove and was covered with the blazing gasoline in the explosion that followed. Nothing could be done to save the farm house and it was burned to the ground. What remained of Hiram's body was recovered several hours later and was interred in the Lutheran cemetery at Orfordville Sunday afternoon.
