The fire broke out twice last Thursday, October 18, 1951, first alarm sounded 1:05 p.m. and the second at 2:45 p.m. Cause of the fire, according to Fire Chief Louis Gregerson, was believed to be from defective electical wiring. The Hayward Volunteer Fire Department had the blaze under control within four hours. At various times the firemen were overcome by smoke, but no casualties were reported. According to William Witt of the company, the stock and fixtures were insured for about 50% of its value. The loss to the building could not be determined at this time. It is owned by the Hanson Estate. The Hayward Drug Company was fortunate in saving the complete file of its prescriptions. The firm has now set up temporary quarters in the old location of the Western Union office, in the rear of the Peoples National Bank building. Officials of the drug company could not state at this time when and where its permanent store would be located, but will give complete prescription service in its present new location. --Found in the Sawyer County Record and Hayward Republican, 25 October 1951.
