Citizens of this entire community were shocked last Sunday afternoon Feb 5, 1933 when news was spread that James Mullally, an aged farmer in the Town of Bass Lake lost his life in the fire which destroyed his farm home. He died at the age of 75 years. His wife was also seriously burned in the fire. From reports received, it appears that Mr. Mullally after eating dinner with his family, left the table to go to an adjoining room used for a pump room to get a match to light his pipe for his usual noon-day smoke. It is supposed that after he had lighted the match he threw it on the floor and in an attempt to put it out by stepping on it, he overturned a five gallon gasoline can. The gasoline being ignited, filled the room immediately with a roaring blaze, The burning gasoline flowed from the room along the floor and under the table where the remaing members of the family were still seated. Attempts were made to enter the room to rescue Mr. Mullally but the flames had gained such headway that an entrance in that way was impossible. So Francis, one of the sons, attempted to reach his father by breaking the one window in the pump room but round the room so full of flames she was unable to enter. The body was not recovered until three hours later after the blaze had spread to the house, which was burned to the ground. Mrs. Mullally, also seeking to rescue her husband was burned seriously about the arms and legs and was taken to the hospital here where she received medical treatment for her burns. Mr. Mullally's death was instantaneous. The home in which the Mullally family has lived for the last 40 years and in which all of their eleven children were born was valued at about $3000 and was partly covered by insurance. Mr. Mullally was born in Emmet, MI and spent the first 35 years of his life there. He and Mrs. Mullally then moved to the Town of Bass Lake, making their home in the house which burned Sunday about 9 miles from this city. Mr Mullally was a logger for many years but about ten years ago took active charge of the farm. Mr. Mullally is survived by his widow, five duaghters, Mary of Superior, Helen and Dorothy of Oconomowoc, Theresa of Evanston, IL, and Gertrude who attends high school here and lives at home, and six sons, John of New York, Patrick, whose whereabouts at present are unknown, and Joe, Francis, Paul and James, all living at home. The funeral was held from the St. Joseph Catholic church here this morning. Rev. Fr. Kalandyk officiating. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery. The entire community sympathizes with the sorrying relatives. © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm
