May 6, 1998 (this one I wrote myself!) VOX POP section SAVE OLD LIBRARY TO USE AS HISTORICAL BUILDING My name is Cindy Johnson. I lived in Medford from the time I was born until shortly after my 17th birthday. Every year I visit Medford to see my family. I have been trying to keep myself up to date on the progress of the new library and had just one question: What is going to happen to the old library building on Perkins? I certainly hope that they will not tear that wonderful old building down. I had thought about it a long time. I think the building should be turned into a historical building; showing the progress of Medford from the time it began as a wilderness town with dirt paths for streets to a new age city with a lot of great people in it and working to keep it a wonderful place to live. I for one would surely make it a point to visit such a place every chance I could. That building has been there for a very long time and is a landmark for Medford. Not very many of the business buildings in Medford have stayed the same as they started out. The library would be a great place to start and a wonderful place to show off the roots of the city. I am working on my family history. Medford is where my family settled when they came from Germany in the 1800's. My great great grandfather, Otto Schwarz, built the infamous "Old Castle" on Castle Road some four miles out of town. My family has since stayed near Medford and has prospered greatly. It would be a shame to see the last building showing the history of Medford to be torn down or turned into some commercial place of business. Cindy Schwarz Johnson, Mt.
