Gifford E-mail: jangif@execpc.com Source: The Rib Lake Herald, Friday, November 1, 1918 KILLED IN A RUNAWAY Herman Carl Gnotke, a pioneer resident of the town of Rib Lake, had a runaway last Friday afternoon while returning home from his village and died the next morning at one o'clock from his injuries. He was born in Germany in 1859, the 11th of October, and came to American in 1884. He has lived in Rib Lake for 34 years. A wife and 11 children survive him--Frank, Herman, Carl, Emil, William, Meta, Annie, Matilda, Albert, Mrs. Fred Fravert and Mrs. Otto Schalow of Pipestone, Minn. Herman was last heard from somewhere in England. Carl is somewhere in France and Emil is at Jacksonville, Fla. all in the army. Frank Gnotke, who lives at Lake City, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schalow, Pipestone, Minn., came to attend the funeral which was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house, Rev. A. P. Sitz officiating. Interment was made in the village cemetery. The pall bearers were Carl Kalk, Berthold Hein, Ernst Gerstberger, John Burzlaff, Herman Hanke and Werner Radtke. The family has the heartfelt sympathy of this community in their loss.
