Few if any of us can realize what the early pioneers of this section had to contend with. Impoverished homes, crude machinery, a virgin soil that had first to be cleared of brush and timber, before it could be tilled, work, hard work with lots of it was the lot of these faithful strugglers, whose determination would not let them rest or waver untilthey had accomplished the task and had secured the goal they had set before them. And what are the results and accomplishments of these determined pioneers? Broad acres, stately homes and other farm buildings, modern machinery, home and farm conveniences. Truly a magic wand could scarcely bring about such mystic results. But here we have all this accomplishment wrought by one short generation, a feat that savors of miracles. Among the pioneers of this section who had no small part in this progressive cause were Johna nd Anna Bill, of Bill's valley in the town of Arcadia, Wisconsin. Relying on their own resources and trusting in the all omnipotent God they toiled and labored with such zeal and vigor that even the elements took recognition of their efforts and assisted in rewarding them for their strenuous efforts. Anna Sluga, daughter of Frank and Barbara (Killian) Sluga was born in Poppelau, Oppein, Germany on April 9th, 1851. In the year 1865 she came to America with her parents and landed at Trempealeau, Wis. On January 19, 1869 she was united in marriage with John Bill at the Mission church in Myers valley. They at once went to housekeeping on their Bill's valley farm. This union was blessed with twelve children, six of whom however died in infancy. Here she spent practically all of her life. IN 1906 they retired from farming and had a modern residence built on part of the farm where she spent her declining years. Her husband preceded her in death on January 17, 1914. She remained at her farm home until 3½ years ago when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. James Cantlon at Ettrick, where she was tenderly cared for during her declining years. She had quite a sick spell earlier in the year but rallied again until she had another attack from which she failed to rally, gradually becoming weaker until last Friday, June 13, 1930 when she quietly went to sleep. - Newspaper unknown.
