They settled in Herkimer, New York, where he was employed on the N. Y. Central R.R. as branch tender. He distinguished himself here by avoiding a collision between a fast express and a freight train, at the risk of his own life. Here he entered the merchantile business with his brother Edward. During the Civil war he was drafted but bein unable to leave his family he secured a substitute. After the war he came West, landing at Fountain City and thence coming to Arcadia where he located in Bill's Valley, where he soon opened a fine farm and where he has lived ever since until death claimed him on November 26, 1914. He had been ailing from cancer of the intestines which ultimately caused his death. He also took an active interest in his community and was a member of the town board of the town of Arcadia for several terms. He was a devoted member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and his Christian Character stood out prominently in all his dealings with his fellowmen. He was the father of fourteen children, five of whom preceeded him in death, besides his parents, two brothers and one sister also preceeded him, the children living are Edward, Joseph, John, Adam, George Haines; Mrs. John Rohn, Mrs. John Wenzel, Mrs. Mat Frisch and Miss Lena Haines.
