Y. Freeman, Galesville, Wis., April 7, '97 Robert W. Smith, Esq. Yakima County, Wash. Dear Sir:- I suppose your brothers have written to you about the matter, but I am not sure. On your late fathers's property there are mortgages amounting to some $1400, and the only way we can save any thing is to borrow the money and pay off the heirs. Your brother in-law Larson holds a contract for 160 acres and the mortgage covers his land as well as the old farm on which John lives. They propose to deed the quarter section to Grace and then she borrow some on her land, and John borrows on his and pay off the heirs. Before the money can be borrowed Grace must have a deed to the land so she can give a mortgage. The deed must be sent back to me, or to the Bank of Galesville, and we will hold it until the whole business is done, and it must all be done at the same time. There is no other way out so that the heirs can all get their share.... (hand written at bottom of page) Larson was to pay $2000 for the quarter. Grace takes her share out and pays the balance to the heirs, and John does the same.
