He was the seventh of nine children. He was married to Ellen Ayers on April 22, 1880. To this union were born five children. The survivors are his widow and four daughters namely Mrs. L. J. Doty, Mrs. Richard Hanson, Mrs. J. A. Griffin, and Mabel, all of Birchwood; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One son, Roy, the oldest child preceded him in death in 1921. One sister, Mrs. Belle Marks, of Buffalo, N. Y., and one brother, Edwin of Britt, Iowa survive him. He has been a resident of Birchwood for the past thirty years and was well known here. Many people have been grateful for his help in finding water for them as he had that gift of locating under ground water. His grandmother's uncle, William Gettes, owned the land and laid out the town of Gettysburg, where the first decisive battle of the Civil War was fought. The funeral was held April 3rd at the Free Methodist church in Birchwood of which he was a member. The services were in charge of Rev. E. A. Wolf of Ladysmith and Rev. Fensome of Birchwood. He was laid to rest in Woodlawn cemetery. The deceased was a man of sterling character and the community has lost a good friend and citizen. Our sympathy goes to the relatives at this time. --Taken from the Washburn County Register, Shell Lake, Washburn Co., WI, 8 April 1937
