BRAINERD C.R. "Dick" Brainerd, 75, Town of Crystal, died on Wednesday, June 29, at his home. He was born on Dec. 9, 1918, to Ira and Ollie Brainerd in Wauzeka, and was raised in the Boscobel and Fennimore area. He served as a captain in the Army during World War II. He was employed as a senior agent for New York Life at Fennimore for 30 years. On June 3, 1978, he married Milda L. Steiner in Gordon. In 190 they moved from Fennimore to Potato Lake in the Town of Crystal. He was a member of Fennimore Masonic Lodge No. 219 F&AM, Fennimore Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7499, and Fennimore American Legion Post No. 184 of which he was past commander and past member of the Kiwanis Club of Fennimore. He is survived by his wife, Milda; one son, Richard (Mary), Mahtomedi, Minn., one daughter, Barbara (David) Martin, Centralia, Wash., three stepsons, Nick (Marietta) Steiner, Copperas Cove, Texas, David (Janice) Steiner, Bostic, N.C., and Scott (Roxanne) Steiner, Colorado Springs, Colo., one stepdaughter, Shelly Galloway, Hayward; six grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; one sister, Genevieve Farris, Minong; and his mother-in-law, Mildred Paczynski, Spooner. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Charlotte (nee) Roethe. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spooner, with Pastor Will Mowchan officiating. Interment followed in Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Spooner, with military rites accorded by the Spooner Area Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation and Masonic services took place on Friday at Scalzo Funeral Home, Spooner. Memorials to the Washburn County Unit of the American Cancer Society are preferred. Arrangements were handled by Scalzo Funeral Home, Spooner.
