OBIT The Spooner Advocate 11/20/1941 Gustave H. Butenhoff, one of the early pioneers of Morgan township, died at Lake View Sanitarium, Madison, Wis., Thursday evening, November 6, 1941 at 10 o’clock, at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 26 days. Gustave H. Butenhoff was born in Zarben, Germany, December 11, 1861. As a child of seven years he came to the United States in 1868 and the family settled at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. In 1874 the family moved to Iowa. On February 23, 1888, he was married to Bertha Willimina Korth of this community and immediately left for Orlando, Fla., where they established their home for a number of years, then came back to Morgan township to live until 1916, when they moved to Earl, Wisconsin. For the past seven years he made his home with his daughter, Hilda, at Madison, Wis. Their home was blessed with 11 children, of these, 3, Adelia, Leonard, and Emil preceded their father in death. His faithful wife died 24 years ago. Mr. Butenhoff worshipped in the Morgan church for many years, as they lived near Dows the greater of their life, being one of the oldest settlers. His friends were a great comfort to him in his declining years and his Bible was a great source of inspiration as he read it daily. Mr. Butenhoff was of a quiet and humble disposition but with a very likely personality that won him many friends. He has gone beyond the touch of human hands, but his memory will live on in the hearts of a host of friends. There survive to mourn, 8 children; Adolph of Dows, IA., Arthur, Leo, Walter, and Mrs. Lulu Holt of Earl, Wis., Gustave of Shell Lake; Mrs. Martha Thomas of Faribault, Minn., and Mrs. Hilda Thomsen of Madison. Also 22 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Besides his immediate family he leaves to mourn his loss, 2 brothers, Albert Butenhoff of Baker, Minn., and John of Los Angeles, Calif. Mr. Butenhoff was laid to rest in the Morgan cemetery east of Dows, Ia. The services were in charge of Rev. Roloff who based his message on Romans 8.18. The male quartet, sang three numbers, “Rock of Ages,” “Going Down the Valley,” and “That Beautiful Land.” Beautiful flowers were given by relatives and friends. The pallbearers were his five sons Adolph, Arthur, Leo, Gustave, Walter and son-in-law Ralph Holt. B. Thomsen and baby, Madison; Mrs. Earl Thomas, Faribault, Minn.; Albert Butenhoff and son Will, Baker, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Butenhoff and family, Hampton, Iowa; Grace Butenhoff, Baker, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schweiger, Hampton, Iowa; Albert Bauge, Coulter, Iowa, Mrs. Anton Lamfertson, Popejoy, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Walford, Clear Lake, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Shaffer, Clear Lake, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Hickok, Clear Lake, Iowa.
