This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Nance Sampson 23 February 1999 ==================================================================== Spooner Teacher, Marie Hess, Dies Mrs. Arnold (Marie) Hess, 67, Shell Lake, died Wednesday, June 14, 1978, at the Shell Lake Indianhead Memorial Hospital. The former Marie Schaper was born March 23, 1911 at Hartford, So. Dak. She attended Sioux Falls (S.D.) College and taught at Sioux Falls for two years. She then attended Superior State College and taught at Tozer Lake and also for one year at Birchwood. On June 30, 1940 she was married to Arnold Hess at Shell Lake. She then taught at Spooner for 29 years. Mrs. Hess was honored as the outstanding educator by the Spooner Jaycees in 1973 when she retired. She received a bachelor of science degree from Superior State in July 1958, and also did subsequent graduate work. She first began her schooling in Superior in 1933. She was the organist at St. John's Lutheran Church, Shell Lake, for 25 years. She was a member of the Evening Guild of Shell Lake and Spooner, the Lutheran Women's Mission League and she was a charter member of the Hilldale Home- makers Club. Besides her husband, she is survived by a brother, Lloyd Madaus, Rice Lake. The funeral was Saturday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Spooner, Rev. Lane Seitz officiating, with burial in the Shell Lake Cemetery.
