The funeral of Frank J. Holmquist held on Thursday afternoon at the Salem Lutheran church in Shell Lake, Wis., laid to rest in the family lot here, one of this community's earliest pioneers and most highly respected citizens, having lived here for nearly half a century. Services were conducted by Rev. C. D. Mattson, who paid a fitting tribute to the old settler and fine Christian character. Mrs. Melvin Swan and Glen Peterson sang three beautiful hymns, with Mrs. Wm. Toftness as accompanist. Mr. Holmquist was born in Smoland, Sweden, on June 12, 1856 and died on April 26, 1937 at the home of his son, August. In 1880 he was married to Sara Johnson in Sweden and they came to America in 1885, settling at Shell Lake, Wis., where Mr. Holmquist was employed in the lumber mills. After a short time here, he acquired a 60-acre tract of land in Bashaw township where the family made their home, and he lived there until about three years ago, when his health and eye sight failed him, he resided at the home of his son, August. He leaves to mourn his loss two daughters, Mrs. B. Hawkinson and Mrs. E. A. Sundeen, both of Duluth, Minn., and one son, August, of Shell Lake; besides three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. His wife passed away in 1897; one son and two daughters died in infancy; a daughter, Hilda, died on Oct. 11, 1936. Mr. Holmquist was a sincere and conscientious man, and held his home and church as the basic foundation of his life. He was industrious and kind and cared little for worldly pleasures. He was a charter member of the Salem Lutheran church in Shell Lake.
