Penning, 73, Shell Lake, died on Monday, July 4 at Indianhead Medical Center, Shell Lake. He was born on Aug. 8, 1920, in New Auburn to Noah and Nellie Penning. He graduated from Bloomer High School in 1937. On Feb 14, 1942, he married Muriel Somsen in Stillwater, Minn. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. Following the service they resided in Baldwin, Bloomer, and Hixton, moving to Shell Lake in 1951. Nolan was manager of the Sarona Farmers Union for a number of years and then managed the Shell Lake Boat Company until 1971. He then owned and operated Indianhead Abstract Company until his retirement. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and served as treasurer of the Shell Lake Chamber for many years. He was a member of the Shell Lake Hospital Board and had served as alderman and president of the Shell Lake City Council and mayor of Shell Lake. He was a member of the Rice Lake Elks Lodge and was named Shell Lake's co-citizen of the year in 1981. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993. Survivors include two sons, Gregory Penning, St. Paul, and Michael Penning, Trego; one daughter, Nancy Penning, Chicago; four grandchildren and three sisters, Vivian Rufledt, Bloomer, Lois Hoyt, Superior, and Evelyn Slinde, Middleton. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, at Salem Lutheran Church, Shell Lake, with Rev. John Simundson officiating. Burial will be in Shell Lake Cemetery with military services conducted by the Shell Lake Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pockat Funeral Home, Shell Lake, and for one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. A scholarship is being established at Shell Lake High School in his memory.
