Welter, a Shell Lake physician for 18 years from 1953 until 1971, died in his sleep Monday night (23 December 1980) at his home in Elm Grove.He had been ill for several months. He was 60. He apparently suffered a heart attack. Dr. Welter was a professor and chairman of the Department of Family Practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin from February, 1976, until his death. After leaving Shell Lake, Dr. Welter became a professor at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta, Ga., until taking over the Medical College of Wisconsin position. He was the first chairman of the department which presently is training 99 resident doctors in family practice. Dr. Welter was a charter diplomat of the American Academy of Family Practice; a past president of the Washburn-Barron-Sawyer Counties Medical Association; the Marquette University Alumnus of the Year in 1976; served on several state level medical committees and was published in various medical journals. While in Shell Lake, he was a member of the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce. He also was a member of the Milwaukee Elks. While in Georgia he was vice chairman of the Department of Family Practice and medical advisor for the War Veterans Nursing Home. Dr. Welter was born March 9, 1920 in Superior. He served in the Army in the South Pacific during World War II, then joined the Naval Reserve. He was graduated from the Marquette School of Medicine in 1952, served a year of internship in Milwaukee, then came to Shell Lake. In addition to his widow, Kathryn Mae, survivors include six children, Nancy Peter, Mary Pat Rogers, John, Joseph, Elizabeth and Frederick, and two grandchildren, Jason and Jennifer Peter. Also surviving is one sister, Patricia Jorgensen of Albuquerque. His son, John, recently received his law degree while another son, Joseph, is in medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Services will be Friday in Milwaukee. The family has requested in place of flowers, friends make a memorial contribution to the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Family Practice. The address of the Medical College is 2315 N. Lake Drive, Milwaukee, Wis., 53211. A memorial service will be held Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Becker and Ritter Funeral Home at North Avenue and 140th Street, Milwaukee.
