Smith, who passed away in death at his home five miles southwest of this city last Thursday, was born in the city of New York on May 9, 1822. In early life he made engineering his business and as such came to Milwaukee in 1847 where he remained for a year and then removed to Two Rivers, Manitowoc County, where he continued working at his trade for two years. At that time his wife died of cholera which raged in that region. He then came to Washington County and bought the farm on which he has lived ever since. His last marriage took place on July 10, 1873, to Miss Lucretia Hudson, who now mourns his loss. In his early life he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of which he remained an earnest, active and efficient member to the last. He was a true husband, a kind father, and a worthy esteemed citizen. The funeral services were held at his late residence on Saturday, conducted by Rev. J.B. Cole, and his remains were laid to rest by the side of a former companion in Cedar Creek cemetery.
