Schmidt (sic), of Milwaukee, a former resident of the town of Richfield, near Hubertus, was killed in the pit of the State Sand and Gravel Co., at New Butler last Thursday. Death was caused by a cave-in of a gravel bank, and before the unfortunate man was found, life was extinct. The deceased was 35 years old, was born in the town of Richfield and in 1915 married Anna Schmidt. The widow and one daughter survive, besides his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Ph. Schmidt (sic), two sisters, and one brother. The funeral was held at St. Hubertus church on Monday morning, Fr. Mason officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery. Unknown paper, October 19, 1928 Hubertus News This community was shocked to hear of the sudden death of John Schmitt, who had always lived here until about 4 years ago, when he moved to Milwaukee. He was employed in a gravel pit, where he met his death. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Schmitt (Mary Neuburg), and is survived by his wife and daughter, his parents, one brother, and two sisters, all from Milwaukee. The funeral was Monday morning at 9:30 and he was laid to rest in the St. Hubertus Cemetery. It was the largest funeral held here for a long time.
