Old Pioneer Cemetery, Waupaca Co., WI Contributed by Winnie Koukol , June 7, 2004 ************************************************* This is an old old cemetery as you can tell by the burial dates. It wasn't taken care of for years then the caring people in Fremont, WI renovated it but a lot has been lost. This cemetery is next to the Fremont Township Hall on State Highway 110 and County H in Fremont Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. I will start in the northeast corner with Row 1: #1 Only a portion of this marker was found and this soul is known only to the Creator #2 A footstone with the initials 'L.D.'. The major part of the marker has been lost. It is inscribed 'A true generous hearted, loving husband and father.' #3 Henry J Livermore d. Feb 2, 1874; age 57y 6m has Masonic emblem. (note: probably associated with Livermore's Variety Store, a business firm in Fremont in 1857) #4 Arthur Dorr Livermore, son of H.J. & S.H. Livermore d. Nov 21, 1863 Age 2y 10m 24d. Inscribed: "Yet when the first wild throb is past of anguish and despair, To lift the eye of faith to Heaven and think our child is there." #5 marked only with the letters 'L.S.' This footstone and headstone may not originally have been for the same grave. Inscribed "God gave, He took, He will restore, He doesth all things well." #6 A footstone marked with 'L.C.T.' The identity of this sould known only to the Creator. Only a fragment of the stone could be found #7 Marked only with 'C.M.W.' and inscribed in German "Der tod schlaegt tiefe wunden, Das habe ich empfunden, Seitdem ich dich verlor, Gott wird die schmerzen lindern, Ich weine mit vier kindern, Zu dem der droben ist empor" (Death has inflicted deep wounds, This I have discovered, Since that time that I lost you, God has eased the sorrows, I weep with my four children, To Him who rules all things above.) #8 Clarissa Bergstresser, wife of J. (Jake) Bergstresser d. Nov 8, 1862 Age 22y 20d inscribed "Gone Home" #9 Henry Sumner, infant son of Ira & Margaret Sumner d. August 1, 1850 age 10m 5d (this grave marks the beginning of this cemetery, the first burial) #10 Ira Sumner d. Oct 29, 1867 Age 53y 4m 4d (a very prominent pioneer settler, whose role in the history of Fremont is related in the history of this cemetery. Note the Masonic emblem) #11 Margret Sumner, wife of Ira Sumner d. Dec 7, 1888 age 74y 5m 16d (note that the 'a' is missing in Margret, probably an engraver's error) Inscribed: "Rest, Mother, rest in quiet sleep, While friends in sorrow o'er thee weep; And here their heart-felt offerings bring, And near the grave their anthems sing." Sept 28, 1878 age 1y 7m 25d inscribed "Earth counts a mortal less, Heaven an angel more" #13 'D' of 'J.P.' and the date 1876 is engraved on the top of the stone (does 'D' stand for 'daughter'? A crude marker, yet for one precious to the parents and to her Creator) #14 Maria Brouellette, wife of M Brouellette d. July 7, 1867 age 27y inscribed "Gone Home" #15 Emma Eliza Lieber daughter of Charles & Julia Lieber d. April 18, 1864 age 11m 19d inscribed "Dearest darling, thou has left us, Here thy loss we deeply feel, But lo, God hath not bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal" #16 Mary Linie Edwards, daughter of G.S. and S Edwards d. Ein liebes kind oft macht" (Think, Father, how many worries, So many sleepless nights, So many cloudy mornings, A loving child often brings) #38 Henry G Schroeder d. Oct 9, 1872 age 42y 1m 12d (Mr Schroeder was elected as treasurer at the first official meeting when the Town- ship of Fremont was organized in 1865) inscribed: "A faithful husband, kind father, and an upright citizen" #39 Twin daughters of J.R. & M.A. Reily d. May 3, 1875 inscribed: "Too pure for earth, God took them from sin" #40 Louise Ratzburg "Our Mother" b. Apr 14, 1834 d. Sept 4, 1874 (Mrs Ratzburg was an ancestor and distant relative of the Ratzburg families now (1967) living in the Fremont-Weyauwega area) inscriptions.."Hier Ruhet in Frieden" (Here Rest in Peace) "Nun hier werd ich bleiben, Bis mich der Almachtige Vater, Im Himmel auferwecken wird. Am jungsten tage," (Now here will I remain, Until the Almighty Father, In Heaven shall awaken me, On the last day) "Lieber mann, gute nacht, Eure treue wird Gott belohnen, Die ihr habt an mir vollbracht, Ihr lieben kinder, gute nacht, gott Sei dank, es ist vollbracht."
