Obituary: Miss Ashmun Dead in East Native of Wisconsin, She Was Author of Textbooks, Novels and Girls' Stories Journal Special Correspondence Stevens Point, Wis. -- Miss Margaret E. Ashmun, native Wisconsin author of girls' and adults' novels, short stories and English textbooks, died at her home in West Springfield, Mass., Thursday. Funeral services will be held here Monday. Miss Ashmun was about 65. She had lived in the east since 1912 and for the last year had lived at West Springfield. She was born on a potato farm near Rural, Waupaca county. Following her graduation from the Stevens Point State Teachers' college (then the Stevens Point Normal school), she taught at the Stout Institute and attended the University of Wisconsin, where she received her M.A. degree in 1908. She was English instructor there until 1912, when she left for New York to write. Although five early books for girls, called the Isabel Carleton series, brought her wide recognition, Miss Ashmun received her greatest acclaim for "The Lake," a novel with its setting in the Waupaca chain of lakes country which she knew as a girl. The novel she liked best of her work was "Pa -- the Head of the Family." A frequent visitor to England, she lived there on several occasions for long periods and once did research in the British museum. Miss Ashmun is survived by three brothers, Van, of Ashland, Wis.; Walter, of Portland, Ore., and Clifford, of Minneapolis, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Roberts, of New York, and Alice, of Chicago.
