VanOrnum, widow of the late John VanOrnum, died at her home in the town of Royalton Thursday, November 2, 1905. Laura J. Eastman was born in Concord, NH, July 14, 1835, and came with her parents to Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin in 1854. On October 4, 1855, she was married to John VanOrnum, the ceremony taking place at Oshlosh. Her acquaintance with Mr VanOrnum began on her journey westward with her parents, he being a passenger on the same boat. This newly married couple took up their abode at Freemont, where they lived until 1868, comming then to Royalton which has been their home for the last 37 years. Nine children blessed this union, eight sons and one daughter. Four sons and the one daughter were called away in infancy or early childhood. Shortly after comming to Royalton Mrs. VanOrnum with her husband united with the Congregational church of that village, and was a worthy member all the rest of her life. Bodily frailty confined her closely to her home. While she was respected by all the community, those of her neighbors and friends who knew her best loved her the most. She made the Bible her daily study, and leaned with implicit faith on its beautiful promises. Her last sickness covered a period of 15 months during which time she suffered a great with wonderful fortitude and patience. Four sons remain to honnor her memory, George and Fred of Royalton, Charles of Manawa, and Bert who always remained in the old home, whose tender loving care cheered and comforted her till the last. This watch care during her last sickness was shared by his brothers and thier wives, all of whom were at her bedside in her last hours. Funeral services were held in the Royalton church Sunday afternoon, November 5, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Sanders, the foundation of the sermon being the 23rd Psalm, that being a special favorite of the deceased. Her sons and two of her grandsons acted as bearers. The color of the casket was "ashes of roses" and on its cover was a enerous burden of beautiful flowers. Additional Comments: Obituary for Laura Jane (Eastman) Van Ornum, 1834-1905..
