The young couple rode in style in a shining surrey drawn by two hight-spirited horses. It was not a long trip, and Mr. Horton asked the driver to go slowly; but the young lady in question still maintains that they covered the miles in 25 minutes. Thus did Mr. and Mrs. Willis Horton, 300 Bartlett street, think back last Saturday to the day 62 years before when they had become husband and wife. The ceremony was performed by a Rev. Savage, Presbyterian minister in Weyauwega. It took place in the afternoon, followed by a wedding supper in the old Hutchison Hotel. But about 5 o'clock, Mrs. Horton recalls that a terrific windstorm came over the town, and she had to run through the hotel helping to shut windows. However, that first storm of their wedded life blew over, and the trip home to Waupaca was peaceful. They have been home ever since, except for three years in Oshkosh around 1900. Two children were born to the couple: Mayme (Mrs. Fred Leverenz) of Milwaukee, and Herbert of Oshkosh. Descendants now total 12 grandchildren (6 in Milwaukee and 6 in Oshkosh) and 17 great-grand children. Mrs. Leverenz and one son, Norman, and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Horton were present for their parents' anniversary. Open House was held at the Hortons on July 19 with more than 60 friends and neighbors dropping in to extend best wishes. The home was beautifully decorated with flowers provided by neighbors and a large anniversary cake was the gift of Group 2 of the Baptist Women's Union. Mr. and Mrs. Horton have been members of the local Baptist church for 50 years. There were remembered Saturday with many cards, gifts, and a sum of money. The newlyweds of more than half a century ago did not take a honeymoon because it was a busy season on the farm. Mr Horton has been engaged in truck and garden farming for much of his life. He served at one time as street commissioner of the city of Waupaca. He was born in this community, and Mrs. Horton has lived in or near here ever since she was 3 years old, when her parents moved west from Canton, New York. They have lived in their present home for more than 40 years. The Hortons remember especially their 25th anniversary back in 1910. There were no electric lights in their home then, and jack-o-lanterns were hung out on the lawn for the celebration. Their 50th anniversary sort of slipped by without any festivities. Mr. explains with a twinkle in his eye by saying that they did not want a lot of gold around the house. Mrs. Horton is convinced that modern marriages would succeed as happily as hers if young people would build their lives around their home instead of seeking a constant "good time" which only ends in headache and heartache. Additional Comments: My husband is from Herbert's line. Herbert's 7 children were: Paul William Albert, Dorothy Lucille, Mildred Marie, Harold Herbert, Russell Edward, Donald Willis and Richard Clifford File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/wi/winnebago/newspapers/willisho32gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/wifiles/ File size: 3.7 Kb
