Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Caroline ALLEN ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, October 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Winneconne Local Oct. 10, 1912 p.1 Another Pioneer Gone to the Beyond Mrs. Stephen Allen, whose maiden name was Caroline Mix, was born n Steuben County, New York, February 7, 1820. On September 10, 1839, she was married to Stephen Allen. They remained in New York till 1848, when at Mrs. Allen's suggestion they came west, travelling in a schooner wagon as far as Illinois the first year. The next year they came to Wisconsin and in May 1846, they settled on the farm which has ever since been the Allen home. Those were truly pioneer days. The Indians were her only neighbors. While working in her cabin she would often look up to find an Indian peering at her through a crack, or hearing a creeping noise outside, would rush out to find them stealing from their salt pork barrel. At night she could hear the Indian bells ringing to drive away the evil spirits. It was six months before Mrs. Allen saw another white woman. It was a brave and energetic band of young men and women who came to Ball Prairie in 1846-7. Most of them spent the remainder of their days her and love for each other and for the old homes grew with the passing years. Gradually the ranks have been thinned, three being taken the past year. Of these Mrs. Allen reached the greatest age and was the last to go. After a brief illness of seven days she passed away at o'clock Wednesday evening, October 2nd. Mrs. Allen was a woman of sterling qualities. Hers was a quiet, industrious practical life. Her cheerful, unselfish disposition enabled her to bear the larger as well as the smaller crosses of life without complaining. In the early years of their life in Wisconsin their oldest daughter, Mariette, died and was the first to be buried in the old Bell cemetery. In 1888 they lost their youngest child, Mrs. Carrie Allen Heath. Mr. Allen lived till November 12, 1897, and two years ago, in her extreme old age, Mrs. Allen was called upon to mourn the loss of her oldest living child, Mrs. Edgar Vredenburg. Mrs. Allen was devoted to her home and family. Still she made many friends to whom she was very true. She was singularly free from the infirmities and limitations of old age. Her mind was very clear and all her faculties wonderfully preserved. Until her last illness she was accustomed, in a large measure, to do for herself and shared in the care of her great-grand-children, of whom she was very fond. She leaves two sons, Charles Allen, of Allenville, and Clarence Allen, of Winneconne, a daughter, Mrs. Harry Cross, of Campbell, Minn., ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren to mourn her death.
