Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Daniel J. BARDES ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, October 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Winneconne Local, sept. 26, 1912 p.1 Details of Bardes' Death The death at Yakima, Was., of Daniel J. Bardes, a former resident of Oshkosh was fully as tragic as briefly given in a recent report in the local columns of The Northwestern. Relatives of the deceased have now received a detailed account of the death, as contained in a newspaper published in Yakima. Mr. Bardes conducted a barber shop at the Washington city. He was short and almost instantly killed about t o'clock in the evening by the accidental discharge of his shotgun as he and his companions were preparing to return from a day's hunt in the Selah. No inquest was held as the death was shown to be purely accidental. The Yakima account of the tragedy states: Bardes' gun was discharged as he dropped the butt to the ground in front of him, holding the barrel in one hand. The charge went through the sweater and outer clothing at the lower edge of the chest, passed upward between the clothing and the body, struck the jaw and throat, smashing the lower jaw and adjacent bones to pieces, and almost tearing the head from the body. The unfortunate man was dead before his body fell to the ground. Bardes was one of a party of men who went to hunt in the Selah yesterday. His companions were Frank Loker, J. Nogus, James Walters and the owner of the car in which they made the trip. They hunted all day with fair luck, and had camped and eaten supper at Selah Springs, about twelve miles from North Yakima. After finishing the meal the hunters began to prepare for the trip home, Bardes had placed his gun, a magazine repeater, in the automobile, with the shells still in it. He lifted it from the car and dropped the butt to the ground at his feet, and the shell in the firing chamber exploded. Daniel J. Bardes was well known in this city. He conducted a barber shop at Winneconne for many years. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1863, and was buried by the North Yakima Lodge No. 53 K.P., Thursday, September 19, at North Yakima. Five children survive. They are: Mrs. George J. Weisbrod, Chicago; Nora Bardes, Green Bay; Barbara Bardes, North Yakima; Gertrude Bardes, Fond du Lac; Jerry Bardes, Oshkosh. After the death of their mother five years ago the children all attended school here -- Northwestern.
