Bartels, Meat Dealer in This City for Many Years, Passes Away at His Home Henry C. Bartels, who was engaged in the retail meat market business in this city for a period of thirty-five years, died at his home 416 Eight Street at 5:45 o'clock this morning at the age of 60 years. Death was caused by a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Bartels' death was not entirely unexpected for he had been seriously ill for the last four or five weeks. On Tuesday of this week he returned to his home after a two weeks' treatment at the Bradley Memorial hospital at Madison. For two years he had been in ill health and his condition gradually grew worse. Mr. Bartels was born May 5, 1877 in Oshkosh and lived in this city his entire life. He attended the Eighth Street Lutheran school and the Jefferson ward school. He started in the retail business for himself at an early age and established his first market at 1505 Oregon street. He later moved to 804 Oregon street and conducted a market at that place for a period of seven months. He then started a third market at the corner of Oakland avenue and New York avenue retiring there about the first of April this year. Mr. Bartels had been married twice, his first wife being Miss Bertha Pahlow of Oshkosh. Later he was married to Miss Anna Mauritz of Oshkosh at Menominee, Mich. At the time of his death he was affiliated with the Oshkosh lodge of Odd Fellows No. 188 and the Modern Woodmen lodge No. 378. He had been a member of the Elks, the Eagles and past president of the old German Brothers organization. He held several offices at different times in the Market Men's association. He is survived by his wife and a daughter of the second marriage, Miss Viola Bartels of this city. The children of the first marriage who survive are: Mrs. Harvey Zwickey of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Arthur Gaul of Oshkosh, Mrs. Frank Webb of Oshkosh and Mrs. John Rhyner of Oshkosh. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Amelia Bartels of this city and by two brothers, Richard Bartels of Oshkosh and Herman Bartels of Milwaukee, three sisters, Mrs. Warren Nichols of Oshkosh, Miss Marie Bartels of Oshkosh, Mrs. Albert Farber of Racine and four grandchildren. The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home. Rev. Paul Stange will officiate. Interment will be at Riverside cemetery.
