CALKINS ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, October 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Winneconne Local Dec. 5, 1912 p. 1 Ripley W. Calkins On Wednesday evening, Nov. 27th, occurred the death of Ripley William Calkins, at his home in this village after a long period of ill health. He was born on Nov. 19, 1849 on the old homestead farm of the late Wm. G. Calkins in Ball Prairie, where he lived until 28 years of age. He then bought a farm just north-east of the village of Winneconne, on which he built a comfortable home. Owing to failing health he sold the farm and purchased the pleasant home on East Water St. Six years ago last spring he contracted a severe cold from which he never fully recovered. On Sept. 30 he suffered a stroke of paralysis that confined him to his bed until his taking away. On Dec. 21, 1875, he was united in marriage to Miss Catharine Deily, of Readfield, Waupaca Co. He leaves a faithful wife, three sisters, one brother and several nephews and nieces to mourn his loss. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, Rev. James Churm of the Algoma M.E. church, Oshkosh, officiating, assisted by Rev. J.S. McGreaham, who offered the prayer. The choir sang beautiful selections. Dr. Churm is a special friend of the family, having officiated at the funeral of Mr. Calkins' parents last December and June, at Ball Prairie, his sermon here was an eloquent plea in behalf of the ageless life. Interment took place in the town of Winneconne cemetery. Among the relatives from other places were a sister, Mrs. J.M. Clow, of Marinette; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Deily, of Waukau; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Deily, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Zehner and Mrs Anna Royer, all of Dale, Wis., brothers and sisters of Mrs. Calkins.
