George Sheldon Church, son of Charles and Almire (Gere) Church, was born on the 23d of October, 1844, in Madison County, New York state, and was the fourth child of a family of six children. At the age of five years he came with his parents, from New York state to this county, Vinland township, settling on a farm at Butte des Morts. In the year of 1855 they moved onto a farm near Allenville. Mr. Church grew to manhood and spent the greater part of his life in the immediate vicinity of Allenville, where he cultivated a wide circle of staunch and true friends. On June 5th, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Jane M. Cuff, of Rio, Columbia County, Wis. The first six years of wedded life was spent on the farm near Allenville and on the first day of July, 1908, they moved to this village, where they have since resided. Four children were born to them, three of which survive, the third chid, Charles, having died in infancy. Mr. Church was widely known as a horticulturist and eminent authority on the cultivation of fruits and flowers. His advice was sought by many people as his knowledge of the care of plants and trees was learned thru wide, actual, experience. He took great interest in securing rare flowering plants and was ever ready to acquaint any one with his experience. His flower garden around his home was nature beauty in itself and beautiful boquets were generously distributed to his many friends. Mr. Church enjoyed the very best of health up until several months ago when he was seized with a complication of diseases which resulted in his death. He suffered great pain at different states of his sickness, but was patient and composed thruout until the Angel of Death carried him away. Besides his wife and three children he leaves an older sister and brother, Mrs. Henry Wilcox, of Allenville, and Wm. Church, of this village. The funeral was held from the Allenville church and interment took place in the Allenville cemetery. Rev. Codd officiating.
