Cross a short distance beyond Fond du Lac. For some time past Mr. Cross has been ailing from heart trouble, this affliction being assigned as the cause of his death, which occurred in a set of the early south bound Wisconsin Central train. But a few days since he decided to go south for his health, leaving here this morning. The sudden shock has nearly prostrated a devoted wife, son and daughter. Of the life of Mr. Cross little is known. For upwards of thirty years he has resided in Neenah, where he first engaged in the manufacture of fanning mills in the company with Mr. Peter Johnson. Later on in life he acquired a comfortable fortune as the proprietor of a cooper shop. Before leaving home Mr. Cross left all his private papers in charge of Mr. Robert Shiells president of the First National bank who places his age at little less than seventy years. Mr. John Stevens, in who employ the deceased was once engaged, in speaking of Mr. Cross said: "He was a fine man, quiet, unassuming, shrewd, careful and honest, a man to be respected, whose word was as good as his oath." Owing to his quiet manners he was little known, but among his few acquaintances he was high esteemed, all of who echo the words of Mr. Shiells: "I would have taken his word for a thousand dollars in a minute, such was my confidence in his integrity and my esteem for the man." The body is expected to arrive her this afternoon, when the date of the funeral will be decided upon.
