Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Wilber CROSS ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, January 2010 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Omro Journal May 21, 1896 p.1 Wilber M. Cross was born in Wisconsin Feb. 22 1862, and died in Omro May 16th 1896. His boyhood was spent in Winneconne and for a time in Zion. He attended school at Omro and spent one year in Hillsdale College, Mich. He was an apt student and was always fond of books and of study. He was religiously inclined early in life, having been under the influence of christian parents. He gave his heart to the Lord and his hand to the church when but 17 years of age and has spent his life thus far in the service of the Lord. No one had aught to say against the character of Wilber Cross. He was honest and upright in all his dealings and ever ready to speak and live for the truth. Respected and beloved by his friends and neighbors he leaves a good name which is rather to be chosen than great riches. He was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Russell of Omro nine years ago. They have been years of happiness and joy. Sad indeed is the parting so early in life. During the past few years he has been a great sufferer and yet patient and courageous through it all. He gained the victory overself and was grateful to his friends for their kindness and appreciated all that was done for him. Ambitious to live and succeed in his work, yet submissive to God's will, he was ready to die. At the last he said "It pays to be a christian. Tell my friends that I am grateful for their kindness and hope to meet them again, I'm going Home." A kind and loving husband, a good citizen, a faithful christian, a noble man has gone to his reward. "He fought a good fight, he has finished his course, he kept the faith and now he shall weat the crown.
