Obituary: Winnebago County, Wisconsin: George DURKEE ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, November 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Winneconne Local Oct. 22, 1914 George Durkee, who came to this place on Sept. 6th from Winneconne, Wis., died at the family home on A street after a brief illness of congestion of the lungs. The funeral services were held at the undertaking parlors of the Pullman Furniture & Undertaking on Sunday under the auspices of the I.O.O. F. lodge of this place. Interment occurred in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Mr. Durkee was born in Onondaga county, New York, on March 9, 1847, and was at the time of his death in his 68th year. He moved to Wisconsin in 1866 and in 1869 was married to Marietta Doty. The family moved to Spokane in 1907, residing there five years, returning to Wisconsin in 1912. He then came to Pullman during the early part of September. Besides his wife he leaves four children as follows. H.E. Durkee of Pullman, Earl Durkee of Chicago, Mrs. R.S. Rasmussen and Miss Jessie Durkee of Green Bay, Wis. Mr. Durkee was a member of the I.O.O.F. and Modern Woodmen, the former of which he had been affiliated with for 38 years-- Pullman Tribune. Mr. Durkee was for many years a highly esteemed resident of Winneconne. Held public offices here for years and was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. and Modern Woodman. He was a man of sterling quality and his death came as a shock to his many friends here, having left for the west just three weeks before the end came.
