GRUBE Member of Pioneer Family of Winnebago County Expires -- Suffered Stroke of Paralysis The death of Mrs. Bertha Merton Grube occurred at her home on High street Wednesday evening at about 9 o’clock. She had been in failing health for several months and a few weeks ago suffered a stroke of paralysis from which she did not really, consequently her death was not unexpected. Mrs. Grube was born May 30, 1848, in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, where her parents first residing on arriving in this country from Germany in 18[xx]. Mr. Andrew Merton, father of Mrs. Grube, removed to Winnebago County and settled at a point still known as Merton’s landing. In 1860 Mr. Merton was elected register of deeds for Winnebago county and he then came to Oshkosh to reside permanently. In 1864 he built the substantial brick mansion which still stands as a landmark of early days near Gruenhagen’s point, where he spent the remainder of his life. Bertha Merton was married to Theodore Grube in the seventies and during the life of Mr. Grube, they lived on their farm of which Sunset point was at one time a part. After the death of her husband Mrs. Grube removed to 299 High street and until a year or two ago carried on successfully a dressmaking shop. She was a member of the Rebecca's of the Engleside (?) clan, and of the Congregational church, and was widely known and highly respected. Mrs. Grube was the third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merton, and five sisters survive her. They are Pauline Merton Gruenhagen of this city, Mrs. Auguste Gust of Windsor, Colo., Miss Emma Merton of Portlan, Ore., Miss Flora Merton of Pomona (?), Cal., and Mrs. Anna Geer of Grand Island, Neb. There are several nieces and nephews, among those in Oshkosh being Richard Gruenhagen, assistant director of manual training at the Oshkosh Normal School, Mrs. Alfred Kusche and Leo Merton Gruenhagen, the well known portrait artist of this city and now Chicago. There were no children. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Smith of the First Congregational Church officiating. Interment will be at Riverside cemetery.
