GRUENHAGEN DIES Eveline Street Pioneer Resident Was 80 Years of Age -- Funeral Will Be Held Friday Mrs. Pauline Gruenhagen, widow of Frank Gruenhagen and a resident of Winnebago County for nearly three-quarters of a century, passed away this morning at the home of her son, L.M. Gruenhagen, 103 Eveline street, at the age of 89 (?) years. Mrs. Gruenhagen had been in failing health for some time but had been able to be about the house, both upstairs and down, every day. Last night as had frequently been her habit, she did not go to bed but after preparing for sleep, she wrapped herself in a blanket and slumbered sitting in her easy chair. When her son entered the room at about 6 o’clock she failed to awaken and it was found that she had passed away in her sleep probably within an hour. There was no specific ailment and death is believed to have been caused by a weakened heart, due to old age. Mrs. Gruenhagen was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Merton, pioneer residents of Oshkosh who were among that group which settled in the early days along the river front in what is now the city of Oshkosh. She was born at Bingen on the Rhine, Germany, April 2, 1845 and came to Winnebago county when a girl of 7 years. She had resided here ever since. She was married to Frank Gruenhagen, a member of another pioneer family. Mr. Gruenhagen died in January 1923. Mrs. Gruenhagen was essentially a woman in her home, her greatest interests being her family rather than in social affairs. She was a close reader on a wide variety of subjects, history being of particular interest to her. She was also deeply interested in charity work, much of which she did in a quiet way that never came to the attention of others. She also worked with the Ladies Benevolent society for a number of years before her health failed. She is survived by a daughter and two sons, and by six grandchildren. The daughters Mrs. A.F. Kusche and the sons are R.E. Gruenhagen of the Oshkosh Normal school faculty and L.M. Gruenhagen, an artist of note, all being residents of this city. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the home of the daughter, Mrs. A.F. Kusche, 360 Lake Drive. Rev. Philip Mercer of the First Congregational church will officiate.
