GARDNER ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, October 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Winneconne Local Jan. 23, 1913 Sucumbs to Pneumonia Joseph E. Gardner, a life long resident of this village, passed away at his home, Sunday morning shortly after four o'clock, after a hard week's battle with pneumonia with complications. Mr. Gardner was born in this village on July 6, 1882, and excepting a few brief stays away, he grew into manhood here. In May of last year he purchased the ice business of Frank Harper and in June was forced to give it up on account of sickness, from which, it is believed, he never fully recovered. After he regained his strength he secured employment on a tug boat that plied between Oshkosh and Bay Boom. While thus engaged it is thought he contracted a cold which later developed into pneumonia. He was a prominent member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Fraternal 22 Club and the local Fire Dept. He leaves to mourn his loss, a father and mother, his brother Phillip, two sisters, Mrs. James Annas of Sheboygan, and Mrs. Peter Hanson, who lives north-west of the village, and numerous friends and relatives. The funeral was held in the St. Mary's church at ten o'clock Tuesday morning and the remains laid at rest in the village cemetery. Rev. Luby officiating.
