He was eighty-four years of age and was one of the pioneer settlers, who took up their residence in this county when the wilderness and the Indians occupied most of the territory. He was a prominent member of the G.A.R., having served in the Twenty-first Wisconsin Infantry as a member of Company B. Deceased came to Wisconsin in the fall of 1849 and settled in Winnebago county about two miles west of Winneconne. He enlisted in the volunteer army, Aug 14, 1862, and received honorable discharge and was mustered out July 2, 1865, at the close of the war. He was at one time captured by the rebels and placed in Libbey and Bell prisons. Ohio was his native home, and he was born not far from Cincinnati. A wife and eight children survive. The children residing in Winneconne are Mrs. Cartwright, Mrs. Davis, Frank Alyea and George Alyea.
